2ND AT ISLA MAGARITA WILD WINDS MAY 2009- VENEZUELA

National championship:
From the 22nd of may to the 1st of June I went with Taty Frans and Kiri Thode to Isla Magarita for the Wild Winds.
It was a long way to get there as we had to take three airplanes and with 5 boardbags not so easy in the small aircrafts.
Finally we arrived at the airport Porlemar- Isla Magarita. There we got transport to the hotel Casa Viento and our gear was brought down to the surfside, so good organisation.
National Competion May 23rd and 24th Isla Magarita :
Taty and I where invited to train with the locals for about one hour some slalom what was great. The weather conditions looked good. El Yaque is a very nice surfspot with almost everyday a lot of wind, then I mean 25 knots and more. The first 100 meter is shallow and the wind comes from the side, so have to surf in and out.
Then the weekend we took part in the National competion. There where about 70 competitives and we started from the beach.  Then a downwind slalom with three marks. It was nice to train like this and went quite good. Only in the afternoon the wind pick up and I had hard time to hold my 6.3 warp North Sails in the 30 knots with some gust up to 39 knots.
The next day I got a bit more used to the strong wind and surfed a 2nd and 3rd place.
Overall I managed to get the 2nd place in the National competion 2009 Isla Magarita. After a nice closing ceremony we had the price giving with nice trophies and prices.
International competion:
Fun race:
Today we supposed to start the international racing, but some of the profs Like Peter Volwater, Ben van der Steen en Da Costa where not there yet. So we had late in the afternoon a fun race with marks very close to the shore. Total 4 jibes and short legs with the start this time to the beach.
I had a very good starting position. Just made my old mistake again by looking at, to muchs to my competertives. First mark was hack tick but from there my race was started. Other mark I round very good, so was able to move up many places. Finally finished 3rd with the women out of 7.
I know now I also can surf short legs with more jibes, good position and should trust my own start.
Day 1:
Today we started the international racing as the guys like Peter Volwater en Ben van der Steen arrived as well. The skippers meeting was almost all in Spanish.
My first race went great, had a good start and didnt fall at once, so full speed. The sail 6.3 was just great with about 25 knots. The second start was already harder, as the wind picked up again.
I still had a good position till the last mark. There I good hooked in, in my jibe what trough me over. This heat I surfed 3rd place.
Day 2:
The skippers meeting was almost one hour later, according to the notice board. More new things for today. The start line was more far out.
In the first heat I was making my start most upwind and came around the first mark place 5 of this group, at the third mark I fell in the jibe but continued quick. I finished 3rd in my category.
The second heat took a while to start as there several recalls. So by the time I had to start the wind was very strong.
To strong for the 6.3 but I had no choose. Also we had a recall, so again a new start. I did got my position. Later I realised my upwind starts where not chosen good this time as the track was much longer to the first mark. Finished 3rd again.
In the afternoon there was the freestyle competion. Kiri got 3rd and Taty 4th.
Day 3:
It was going to be a toff day. First long distance and then two heats slalom. We started about 12.00 oclock all categories together. It was a crazy start with so many people. I was in the back and fall in the first jibe. Then we had about 5 km to the mark between Isla Magarita and island Cocho and then full speed back. My speed was good in this race. I was overpowered but was able to hold the sail and before the finished I overtake two other women. After the lunch we had the two slalom heats starting at 15.00 hour.
I changed sail but after seeing the profs and with advise from Elvis Martinus I de-rigged back to the 6.3 again, as the jibe marks where not really windy. Starts where going good today and went twice 3rd over the finish line and was happy about my racing today. Im learning every moment and getting better each time.
Day 4:
The windsurfing heats started at 13.00 hour. It was lighter wind today, I was a bit late at the start line, at the first mark I was knocked over by one of the other girls, so I had to fight back again and managed to finish third again. The second heat I did a good start and was 5th at the first mark and 2nd of the women, behind Colette. After this day I stayed 3rd overall with 2 pints behind the number two, one more day to go..
Day 5:
Today was another day compair to al the other races.
We started with a knock out system today, all the categories mixed: profs, men, master, grand master, youth and women mixed. I was in the heat with some very strong sailors. The best 6 continued to the next round. I finished number 7th so was out for the next round.
In the afternoon we had two long distance races. The second race I switch to my big gear 6.8 and 111 I-sonic as the outside mark was very light wind so both races I finished 2nd in the long distance.
Final score was 2nd in the long distance and 3rd in the international slalom, overall 2nd at the Isla Magarita Wild Winds 2009.
I went back to Bonaire with many trophies and a lot of new experience.
Thanks to the Don Andres, Lazer Airlines, Colette and Elvis Martinus to make this possible for me.
